About me
You can call me Ms. Stevenson or Steve-o, a nickname from 4 of my boys over 10 years ago ago. I have taught a variety of Visual Art, Sculpture, and AP classes since 1997, teaching my first 2 years in Iowa. I have taught in Wake County since 1999. Originally at Sanderson High in Raleigh, taking over for my mentor Bob Rankin. I moved to Rolesville High in January of 2016. I received my BFA in Art Education with a concentration in Ceramics from East Carolina University after transferring from UNC in Chapel Hill. I am a National Board Certified Teacher in Art since 2004,successfully renewing in 2014. In 2013 I was selected as NC’s Secondary Art Teacher of the Year.
While I'm originally from New Jersey, I grew up in Raleigh, graduating from Millbrook High. My exposure to art came at an early age as the artist “gene” seems to run through the females of the Stevenson side of my family. My Dad’s twin sister and mother were both successful painters and my great, great Aunt was an artist and art teacher at Peace College. She has artwork in the Smithsonian collection in Washington DC. While I spent most of my early years working in 2D, painting and drawing, I fell in love with clay in college.
That love of clay is a passion that I have turned into a business named Pots by Jnet. As such, I have participated in several outdoor festivals and indoor craft shows throughout Wake County and NC since 2009. I also exhibit my work at my studio in downtown Raleigh. It is Studio 3 in 311 Gallery located at 311 W. Martin Street. I am usually there during the 1st Friday gallery walk each month, 6-9 pm I would love to see you and chat about art!! While I am best known for my clay work, I have expanded into creating multimedia reliefs/sculptures and 3D paintings. I have won several awards for my art at the State Fair professional art competition.
“My desire is for my students to learn to be creative problem solvers, as this skill will be valuable in any career they undertake. I also hope they learn more about themselves through creating their artwork.”
